HP Mini 2140 Laptop PC is the latest entrant in the HP’s 2100 notebook series. The new HP Mini 2140 notebook PC features with a 10.1-inch screen, a large keyboard, a high capacity HDD, and other impressive specifications. HP Mini 2140 laptop is solidly built. Its brushed aluminum and plastic casing is durable. Unlike some HP models, it doesn’t gather fingerprints either.

Designed to the corporate/students, the HP Mini laptop is light, at 2.4 lbs, and is just perfect for those looking for a mini notebook.  Even though a mini notebook, since the keyboard is 92% of a full sized keyboard, typing in HP Mini 2140 won’t be a problem for most users. However, the touchpad looks awkward, thanks to the placement of right/left mouse buttons on the side of the touchpad.

HP Mini Notebook Screen

The screen of HP Mini 2140 can be best described as a mixed bag. On the good side, the screen is big, with good colors and nice contrast. But, the viewing angle suffers sizably so is the resolution (1024 x 576) available with the base configuration. True, the lower resolution lets one read smaller text easily. But the tradeoff is the inability to have as much text on the screen at a time. That is more scrolling every time for the users.

Also, the HP Mini screen produces significant reflection, a possible side effect of the additional protective layer of glossy plastic used on the screen. Don’t mistake it for the glossy screen on notebooks, but a separate layer of glossy plastic over the screen display area.

Input & Output Ports in HP Mini 2140

•    One ExpressCard/54 slot
•    Two USB 2.0 ports
•    Secure Digital (SD/SDHC) card reader
•    VGA out
•    RJ-45/Ethernet
•    Stereo headphone/line out
•    Power connector
•    Stereo microphone/line in

On the connectivity front, the HP Mini 2140 does not offer a built-in 3G WWAN. Those who need internet might have to use the USB port or an adapter card in the ExpressCard slot. Among its competitors, Dell Inspiron Mini 9 offers built-in 3G WWAN facility.

The  HP Mini Laptop Specifications

The HP Mini 2140 is powered by Intel’s Atom 1.6-GHz processor. Other hardware in the laptop base model include, 1 GB RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 3-cell battery, and XP. For the configuration, the laptop works well with usual tasks such as email, MS Office, music, and to an extent, watching a movie, even though heavy duty software like PhotoShop or GIMP may perform below par. But that is expected, given the processor capacity, which is obviously slower than Intel’s typical notebook or desktop processors.

Other notable features include spill resistant keypad and the 3D DriveGuard to protect its hard drive head from sudden movements such as an accidental free fall to the ground.

Should I Buy a HP Mini Notebook Computer?

The HP Mini 2140 presents a compelling package that gives its competitors a run for their money. The HP mini laptop battery life is excellent, so is its durability and design. Its limited ability to accommodate external gadgets may be a drawback. But otherwise the HP Mini 2140 offers mostly everything one would expect from a mini notebook. The HP Mini 2140 is definitely one of the best mini notebooks to watch out for in 2009.
